About Us
Unit of 1 is a group of independent contractors, free agents, and business owners who all run (very) small businesses, aka a micro-business. The group is here to support all members in running more successful practices by sharing lessons learned, advice, and horror stories.

As a member, you can create a forum discussion topic or submit an article based on your own ideas and needs. Share your thoughts. Gain new insight. Our substance is created from our members needs; our members contributions and ideas fuel each others success.
Who Started Unit of 1?
Unit of 1 was founded in 2001 by Andrea Michalek who continues as the group's managing director. Back in 2001, Andrea had just started her consulting business and bumped into an old friend at a wedding. It turns out this friend had recently started a business as well. All night, they chatted about the challenges and issues in running a one person business. At the end of the evening, they decided to get together that Wednesday for breakfast (and invite some others who had recently begun a business as well.) That morning, 17 people showed up for breakfast, and they decided to meet monthly. Unit of 1 was born.
Five years later - the group has grown considerably. All the growth has been organic to date - word of mouth - friends telling friends.
