elance - a professional services marketplace

elance is one of the many services on the web that claims to hook up free agents with projects. To date - I haven't found any that work though any of these services. Unfortunately, elance also has customer service issues as well...

I subscribed to the service because I thought that there would be value in it for me. It's $25 per month. I figured if I got 1 gig out of it - it would be worth it...

Well - after spending several hours submitting proposals and hearing nothing back, I decided to cancel the service.

You cannot cancel online - only through calling a 1-800 number. I thought this was somewhat lame seeing as they are a web based business - but didn't think much of it. They were very polite on the phone and told me that they would cancel my order - but could not refund the partial month even though I was cancelling it after less than a week and was unhappy with their service.

At the time I signed up - I must have charged it on my personal credit card rather than my business credit card. So - for several months - I did not notice that I was still being charged for the service. (Until my husband asked me what the charge was for each month.)

I sent an email to customer support and they told me that I needed to provide proof of my cancellation. Unfortunately, I did not have proof because the only way that you can cancel is over the phone. I felt that it was strange that they had a policy where customers had the burden of proof - especially since the only way to cancel was over the phone where you don't have a paper or email trail.

They supposedly did look at their call records and said that I neveer called. But - I do remember calling - am out $100 - and still never have gotten even one lead from the service.
