amichalek writes "Now that I've been running a home based business for over 6 years - it's nice to reach out and read tips for how others have been successful at it.
Borrowing from an Entrepreneur.com article - here's their top 8 tips - and my own take on them.
- Structure your day - Nothing spells disaster more than just frolicking through the day. Enter into the work frame of mind - and be diligent about sticking to the most important things that must be accomplished in each work day.
- Stay connected - Isolation is a real problem for those working from home. Even if you just use instant messanger to keep in touch with collegues - engage in non-project related dialog with others.
- Organize your family time - With working from home, the line can easily blur between work and home. It's important that you're not continually sacrificing one for the other. Ala Getting Things Done, I keep a single list for ALL commitiments. This really helps to make sure that my radar has all aspects of my life represented.
- Motivate yourself - Little things can motivate me - great office supplies an motivate me to making and keeping my home office looking professional. Find the "tricks" that motivate you, and use them.
- Take time out for good behavior - Making room for fun is a well deserved break. Celebrate successes.
- Be a Jack-of-all-trades - Running a home-based business requires a lot of skills. It really forces you to get back to basics and understand how all the low level compoents need to come together. Even if your business does grow to where you outsource many of these functions - appreciating where the costs are can be enlightening.
- Network -This can't be stressed enough. If you work from home - you NEED to network - it's not an option to not network and think you can stay in business long term. 'nuff said.
- Consider moving out of your home - Ahh... The push-pull of working from home. I'm just about at the point where I'm going to be setting up a second office outside of my home. I have young children (and a nanny to take care of them when I work). So - being home is really great - I feel like I can have the best of both worlds. But - collaborating face to face is a bit more difficult - and as my projects grow in the sheer number of Topular contractors involved - having a physical location may make things run more smoothly.
