- Get as much PR as you can. In addition to generating leads - being written about in trade publications can establish your credibility for both new and existing clients. You can submit press releases to the Unit of 1 website for all to see.
- Network while focusing on building relationships. Don't attend networking events with the goal of handing out as many business cards as possible. Focus instead on building relationships with others.
- Be active on online listservs of like minded people. Jump in - answer a question - show your expertise. You never know where your next lead is coming from. Click here to join the Unit of 1 discussion forum if you haven't already.
- Position yourself as the expert. The phrase "When in doubt, leave it to the experts" is the message one Unit of 1 sends to his clients.
- Be highly visible. Go to networking events, be out, be where your clients, prospects, and referral sources are.
- When you're emailing anyone and your company name isn't 100% descriptive of the type of service you provide - make sure you include a footer in your email that describes your service.
- Join organizations that allow you to send press releases to their members (such as Eastern Technology Council here in Philadelphia.)
- Run Seminars about your area of expertise. A lot of people and organizations are looking for speakers - volunteer.
- You have to ask. Ask for the sale, ask for the referral, etc. If you don't ask - many times you won't get it...
- Periodically check in with everyone on your contact list. A great way to do this is to call everyone on your contact list to double check contact info. Just beware, if you do this at this time of year - people will be expecting at least a card!
- Know what you know and like. Know what you don't know and don't like. Articulate it!
- Follow up with phone calls to all new contacts and leads. Don't let new deals whither on the vine - often a quick check in phone call will revive a project that never would have gotten started otherwise.

I had a client who was doing a particular technical function inhouse, and having trouble with it. I said "Look, you guys are in the ____ business, not the IT business. Leave the IT to those who do it for a living."
His normally quiet partner, who was at the table, exclaimed "Damn straight -- that settles it." and I picked up some more work.
I often use the "You're in the ___ business, not the ____ business" phrasing when helping people understand the value of outsourcing -- and it works!
