Are Mom's Penalized for Bragging about their Kids?

amichalek writes "Many parents love to brag about their children. Some even note their children's existence on their resumes. Perhaps they shouldn't.

According to research presented by two Cornell University sociologists at a recent Wharton conference, mothers suffer when competing for jobs against similarly qualified fathers and childless men and women.

For Women, a Failure to Negotiate

amichalek writes "In a recent Business Week article, Pallavi Gogoi writes how women's salaries may lag behind men's because of their failure to negotiate.

He gives the following tips on how to negotiate better in the workplace:
  • Show enthusiasm.
  • Know what you want.
  • Avoid showing your hand.
  • Dance around the number and ask what they've budgeted for the position.
  • Show why you're the best fit.
  • Ask the right questions.
  • Wait until they really want you.
  • Be on the lookout at all times.
  • Network, network, network.

Three Key Networking Principles for Women Professionals

amichalek writes "I came across this article by Michelle Goodwine while on another discussion forum. Michelle has allowed us to reprint it here.

In order to break through the glass ceiling and reach gender equity, there are several key strategies that women professionals must adopt. One such strategy is networking.

There is no doubt that women, like men, need others' help to achieve our goals. Very few of us have gotten where we are in our careers without someone's assistance. Honestly we must admit that we may have been hired for a job because of who we knew. And for us women entrepreneurs, much of the business we receive is through our personal contacts."

Engendering Female Entrepreneurs

amichalek writes " Women entrepreneurs are emerging as a major force in the U.S. economy. According to Marilyn Kourilsky, a professor at UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and director of the Institute for the Study of Educational Entrepreneurship, 1 out of every 11 women is a business owner. Female-owned businesses account for almost half of all privately held firms, generating $2.3 trillion in annual sales. The number of women who express an interest in becoming entrepreneurs is also rising. Yet they're still regularly deterred from taking that path, says Kourilsky.

In her book "The New Female Entrepreneur," Kourilsky examines how a collective of parents, educators, and the media offer a more male-centric view of entrepreneurship, leaving women unprepared for the challenges and potential rewards of owning their own businesses.
