Working from Home - Troubleshooting Internet Connectivity Problems

amichalek writes "Last week, I heard a fellow home based business owner say, "The WORST part of working from home, is having to do all your own IT." I couldn't agree more.

Your computer breaks, your internet connectivity is sporatic, your printer stops printing, your software keeps crashing, and who do you have to call. Most times - no one.

Even though I'm a "techie", the last thing I want to spend an afternoon doing is troubleshooting an IT glitch. But, for better or worse, we don't have an "IT department" we can call.

I've been having a terrible month for internet connectivity. Rumor has it that Comcast (my cable modem provider) is upgrading their systems to be able to provide phone service. What this has meant is that there are long periods where my entire neighborhood has terrible service.

To help troubleshoot (and prove that it is in fact a connectivity issue) - here are some tools you can use: "

The Top Twelve E-Mail Mistakes That Can Sabotage Your Career

amichalek writes "By Lydia Ramsey
You return to your office from an afternoon meeting and decide to check e-mail. You wonder where your day went after spending hours downloading messages, reading some, deleting others, crafting replies and filing those that you want to work on later. Your e-mail box was full when you arrived at work this morning and tomorrow promises to be no different.

What is this e-mail explosion? Was there a point in time when the entire world decided to use the Internet as their business communication tool of choice? Are there rules for managing these messages and being a professional and polite user of electronic mail? There are, but not everyone has gotten the word.

Your e-mail is as much a part of your professional image as the clothes you wear, the postal letters you write (assuming you still do), the greeting on your voice mail and the handshake you offer. If you want to impress on every front and build positive business relationships, pay attention to your e-mail and steer clear of these top twelve e-mail mistakes:"

Don't Let Vendors Mislead You About Networking Speeds.

CJRhoads writes "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
By CJ Rhoads

It Started with a Webcast on Infrastructure

Although I'm not as old as Mark Twain was when he colored "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics" with the same brush, this phrase sprung to my mind as I sat through a webcast recently. If you haven't had the pleasure yet, a webcast is like a telecast (that is - like a television show) but it is sent out over the Internet instead of the television cable or satellite. While a television show may cost thousands or millions to put on tv, a web cast can be done much more inexpensively - making it a viable alternative for smaller audiences. It is a common method for technology companies to inform potential buyers about different technologies.

I signed up for this webcast because it promised to reveal which infrastructure standards are in use in business today. There were two reasons I attended. "

Choosing a web host based on price? Don't!

Amabaie writes "It's tempting. There are so many companies offering cut-rate hosting – loaded with astounding post-futuristic techno-gizmo features! – that it just makes sense to save a few dollars, right?"

Tips: Publishing Articles on your Website - How Should They be Formatted?

amichalek writes "A question from the Unit of 1 Yahoo Group discussion forum:

When posting articles on your own website, what is the general rule of thumb on the best way to format them?

Should they be in PDF, Flash, or something else?

What do other people do with articles?

Andrea Michalek responded with:
My advice is if you're putting articles on your website, you should have them accessible in plain old HTML. If you want to offer a PDF version for nicely formatted printing, that's great, but at a minimum, the article should be in HTML."
